Barony of Buittle Sponsors 750 Anniversary Bruce Celebrations

The Barony of Buittle is very pleased to have entered into a season long partnership with the Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust to highlight this significant anniversary in Robert the Bruce's life.

This community based initiative seeks to engage people with the rich and significant history of the local area and its connection with Robert the Bruce.

The Barony is lending a hand by providing venues within its sphere of influence, significantly the Cathedral of Our Lady and St Ninian (Greyfriar's Church) in Dumfries, and the Barony headquarters at Buittle Castle.

The current Baron of Buittle, James de Balliol-Cavendish had this to say: 'We are delighted that the Trust approached us to be involved. Of course, Buittle's history with the Bruces, and particularly with King Robert has not always been a happy one, but, at this distance of history, the good that can be achieved by sharing and educating people about the significant history of this often overlooked area outweighs, by any measure, ancient grudges. We are happy to be able to contribute to this effort in a small, but hopefully meaningful way. We would like to thank the Bruce Trust for thinking of us, and express our gratitude to local MSP Emma Harper for her commendatory motion before the Scottish Parliament commending all those who have partnered with the Trust in this impressive programme'.
