Robert the Bruce's Charter to the Baron of Buittle

Crown Charter Barony of Buittle Robert the Bruce

Monday, 8th of April.

Michael, the Rt. Hon. the Earl of Home, graciously received James de Balliol-Cavendish of Buittle, along with his Austrian colleague Manuel Gruber, at his house, The Hirsel, to view the Crown Charter in which King Robert the Bruce granted the Barony of Buittle to Sir James Douglas in 1325. The visit was made in connection with the Bruce 700th Anniversary celebrations, taking place this year, and the chance to photograph the document and examine it in person will provide an opportunity for a reproduction of the document to be produced and displayed at the Medieval Bruce Heritage Trust's events hosted at Buittle Castle this year.

It was a truly memorable visit, and the Barony team wish to express their gratitude to Lord Home for his hospitality and for allowing the document to be examined and photographed.

Below, an excerpt from the Assignation of Barony to the current Baron, which includes a translation of the original charter.
