The Barony of Buittle is:

1) an establishment by Crown Charter in Scots Law of an area of land, roughly corresponding to the Civil Parish of Buittle into a Barony, over which the The Baron Court of the Barony of Buittle in the Moot Hall Assembled formerly had juridical authority as per the terms of the Royal Charter executed by King Robert of Scots in 1325. Today the Court remains established but carries out only ceremonial functions. The President of the Court is, ex officio, the Baron of Buittle. 2) A social institution whose mission is to carry on the traditional functions of the Barony, as far as is possible, and to provide for the upkeep of the Caput of the Barony, Buittle Castle

The current holder of the Dignity of Baron of Buittle is James de Balliol-Cavendish of Buittle, who is the 32nd Baron.

Barony of Buittle Ltd. is a limited company which operated hospitality activities at the Caput.
