The Barony of Buittle is an area of land with the dignity and office of Baron of Buittle attached to it, established by Robert, King of Scots in 1325. Historically it had certain rights and responsibilities attached to it. From the viewpoint of Social History it has served as a organisational focal point for the local area, as a centre for administrative and cultural activities, and for the promotion of the area's traditions and charitable endeavours. Today, it largely functions in these ways.

In former times it operated in the administration of local jurisprudence along with its ceremonial functions. Today, the Court at Buittle is limited to ceremonial functions, and meets periodically to discuss the activities and direction of the Barony of Buittle.

The headquarters of the Barony, or Caput, is Buittle Castle, the residence of the Baron of Buittle. The Caput is specifically defined as the present dwelling, which has been, since at least the 1500s, the tower house situated on the bailey of the Motte-and-Bailey Castle of Buittle.
